The type of gear I use has changed over the years. My first amplifier was a small combo Yamaha G50-112, which is solid state with reverb, distortion, and push pull controls. I then picked up an incredible sounding Fender Twin Reverb, that I took over to Portugal and used it there for a ton of gigs.
In the mid 80′s I played through a 50 watt Marshall JCM-800 tube 1×12 combo, that I still have. At that time it was the best sounding amp I have ever played through. It still holds its own though.
In the 90′s I played through a Mesa Boogie Studio Tube Preamp and a Marshall 9000 series tube power amp. The rack I put this into along with my effects, was the size of two mini-fridges stacked on top of each other and it weighed a ton. Couple that with my Marshall 4×12 and I had a heck of a backline on stage left. This rig sounded great at extremely loud volumes, so I used it for NYC club gigs.
During the mid 00′s I went back to playing through my Marshall JCM-800 and experimented using Line 6 products through the effects loop. I was thrilled to be able to use this setup, especially since the preamp stage of the Marshall was not functioning correctly.
The Carvin Legacy II head into a 1×12 cab through a Celestion Vintage 30, is my usual setup for every gig. Tubes amps are the way to go.
My Guitar:
I’ve always been a Gibson Guitar fan as far back as I can remember. My all-time favorite guitar, the Gibson Les Paul is a beast to say the least. Although I love the Les Paul Standard and Custom, I choose the Studio line for the type of live performances I play out at and it is everything I can ask for on stage. My Gibson Les Paul screams rock n roll.
